Hunting 05

Richard E. Arnold

1927 - 2021

Richard “Dick” E. Arnold, age 93 of Fredericksburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 12, 2021 at Shady Lawn Nursing Home at 8:25 a.m.  Dick’s many years were filled with adventure and family before he finally surrendered his life in this world to be with his heavenly Father following a long battle with prostate and bone cancer.

Dick was born on March 21, 1927 and was the youngest son of Dennis and Leona Arnold.  Dick grew up on the Arnold farm located outside of Dalton.

Dick was passionate about “living” life.  He was both an avid fisherman and hunter.  These life passions were kindled in Wayne County and, through the years, Dick shared his love of fishing with family and friends.  His wife, Marvaline, was always at his side as he fished the waters from Pleasant Hill Lake to Quebec.  He shared these fishing adventures with his sons, grandchildren, and friends, and together they created many memories and of course “fishing stories.”

Hunting was also an important part of Dick’s life, from hunting rabbits, squirrels, racoons, and deer in Wayne County to hunting in Colorado and Montana for deer and elk and even a trip to Canada to hunt caribou!  One of his favorite places was in South Dakota with the Hutterite community, where he loved to hunt pheasants and spend time with friends who welcomed him into their home.  These adventures were shared with his sons and friends over the years.

Traveling was another adventure that Dick loved: exploring new places, meeting new people, and of course telling stories and sharing life -- often over a glass of his signature, homemade sour cherry wine. Dick’s presence will be missed by his family and friends, who treasure their memories and stories of him.  Those that knew him well might be forgiven for imagining that his parting word to this world was “whoopee!”

In addition to honorably serving for two years in the Navy,  Dick was a member of the Apple Creek American Legion Post #147, a lifetime member of the Wayne Coon Hunter’s Association, a member of St. Mary’s Church in Wooster, and a supporter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.  He retired from the Timken Company in Wooster.

Dick is preceded in death by his wife, Marvaline, his son Dennis, his siblings Ray, Ford, and Mildred “Mid” Dreher-Smith, and his parents Dennis and Leona Arnold.  He is survived by his son Robert (Barbara), son Michael ((Patti), daughter-in-law Julie, daughter Jill (James), seven grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

A private service will be attended by Dick’s family and he will rest at Arnold Cemetery.  Memorial donations in honor of Dick can be made to the Silver Dollar Sports Club to support their youth programs.  Make checks payable to Silver Dollar Sportsman Club and mail to 5040 Secrest Rd. Wooster, OH  44691.
