Joe Byler Obituary

Joe D Byler, 74, of Millersburg, Ohio went home to meet his Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ on January 7, 2024. He passed away peacefully at the Pomerene Hospice Lifecare Unit with his beloved family surrounding him. He had been battling cancer since 2018 and he contracted pneumonia and his body could not fight it off anymore.
Joe was born to David and Susie Byler on August 8, 1949. He married the love of his life, Martha Byler on February 29, 1968 and they enjoyed 44 years of matrimony. She preceded him in death in December 2012 and he missed her deeply every day that they were apart. It is without question that Joe’s family was the pride and joy of his life and there was no better time for him than when they were all together, playing games and cutting up. He loved to sit around a fire, listening and watching his grandchildren playing around him. The most important thing to him was that all his children and grandchildren know and love Jesus. One of his favorite Bible verses was John 14:3 and he would quote it often. He loved to fish and he would be on the lake as often as he could, often taking whichever of his family could go with him. Unfortunately, he never got to keep the big one; it always got away. He had a fun-loving personality and had a genuine love for people. Never one to sit idly, he took up taxi work for the local Amish community after his retirement in 2013. When he was able, he attended Broken Grounds Church in Millersburg.
He is survived by and will be deeply missed by his 8 children: Willis (Mandy) Byler of Millersburg, OH, Reuben (Lorna) Byler of Mt Enterprise, TX, Sylvia (Daniel) Miller of Holmesville, OH, Miriam (Matthew) Gingerich of Holmesville, OH, Esther Byler of Millersburg, OH, Marie (Ivan) Mast of Big Prairie, OH, Viola (Brandon) Leatherman of Fredericksburg, OH, Joanna Byler of Fredericksburg, OH. 18 grandchildren: April,  Heidi (Preston), Colton (Katelyn), Henry (Chelsey), Ashley, Viola, Willis (Jen), Rhonda, Todd (Denise), Rose (Kendall), Ina, Sarah, James (fiancé Kate), Joshua, Amy (Nick), Martin, Makenzie, Suzy, Logan, Lucas. 9 great grandchildren: Sydney, Trinity, Emelia, Colin, Kayla, KC, Ronin, Gentry, and two more on the way. He is also survived by one brother Joas (Martha) Byler of Fredericksburg and three sisters, Mary (Mose) Shetler of Fredericksburg, Susie (Jonas) Nisley of Loudonville and Nancy (Tobias) Miller of Fredericksburg; sisters-in-law, Anna (Alvin) Byler of Fredericksburg and Mary (Jake) Byler of Wooster; brother-in-law William (Anna) Bender of Middlefield and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers John and Jake, sisters Anna Bender and Katie Byler, seven half-brothers Atlee, Norman, Tom, Davie, Jonathan, Nevin, Alvin and one brother-in-law, Mose.
