ELIZABETH “KAY” KAHRIG has journeyed into the light. She passed March 20, 2023 at West View Healthy Living.
Kay was born the 2nd of 6 children to Donald and Marjorie Boyes of Creston. She was born on February 22, 1941 and as a child she expected cherry pie or cake to celebrate her and George Washington’s birthday. Kay graduated from Norwayne High School in 1959 and was ahead of her time as a female in sports. She had been a member of girls’ basketball team (in the days of half court) and was renowned for her speed, outrunning boys in her class. After graduation Kay married Jim Long and the union produced two daughters: Cynthia Denise (Steve) Bernardy of Wooster and Cathleen Diane (Jeff) Sheppard of Barnesville, Ohio. Kay retired from the Wooster Community Center having been employed by the City of Wooster for 30 years. She especially enjoyed working with the older segment of the population. She was active in the United Methodist churches she attended until her mobility became an issue. Kay loved family reunions (especially at Lake Erie), family hikes in Mohican State Park, looking for deer (everywhere!) and would drive to Cuyahoga Valley National Park just to count how many she could see. She was an excellent seamstress, crocheted afghans and embroidered items for her family. Kay also loved driving her 1968 Ford Mustang convertible and enjoying antique car shows.
Kay is survived by her daughters and grandchildren: Brent (Kelly) Gunn, Ben Gunn, Jewel Harris, Reed Harris, Tyler (Amy) Bernardy, and Austin Bernardy; and great-grandchildren: Shea Gunn, Avery Gunn, Daisy Gunn, Blake Gunn, and Felix Bernardy. She is also survived by her sister Sally Boyes-Hyslop.
Waiting for her are her infant daughter, Gail, her parents, brothers, Don, Bob, Larry, and Richard Boyes and her many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Family services were held with burial in Creston Maple Mound Cemetery.
