Obituary

 

Keith Douglas Carlson, 90, of Wooster, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at West View Healthy Living in Wooster.

Doug was born on Feb. 28, 1933 in Los Angeles, CA to B. Keith and Dorothy M. (Barger) Carlson where he resided until moving with his family to Redlands, CA in 1945.  He was a member of the Redlands High class of 1950 and attended the University of Redlands where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1954. Doug attended the University of Kansas where he specialized in Chemistry and Physics and attained his Ph.D.  in 1960.  After advanced research at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois and a Fulbright Scholarship to Oxford University in England, Doug received an appointment in 1962 as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Case Institute in Cleveland.  On Aug. 7, 1965 he married Marlene J. Cramer from Fredericksburg.

Doug remained on the Case Western University faculty until 1979 at which time he accepted an appointment as Senior Scientist in Chemistry and materials Science at Argonne National Laboratory.  During his teaching and research career, he specialized in studies of chemistry and physics of materials and molecules under extreme conditions of both very high and ultra-low temperatures.  He received numerous awards and honors for his research accomplishments.  Doug was especially proud of having supervised the research of 16 doctoral candidates at Case and numerous excellent undergraduate and post-doctoral students at Case Western and Argonne National Laboratory.  He was an author and coauthor of more than 150 research articles published in various scientific books and peer-reviewed journals.  Doug retired from Argonne National Laboratory in 1995 and moved to Wooster in 1997.  He was a member of the American Physical Society and an emeritus member of the American Chemical Society.

Surviving are his brothers, J. Wendel Carlson and H. Andrew Carlson; a sister, Karen Anderson all of Palm California and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene on Aug. 2, 2018 and his parents.

Family graveside services will be held on Friday at Fredericksburg East Cemetery.  Murray Funeral Home in Fredericksburg is handling arrangements.  Memorial contributions may be made to LifeCare Hospice, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, OH 44691.
