William Gregory Schmock

William Gregory “Bill” Schmock, 80, of Seville and formally of Chippewa Lake, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Medina after a long and courageous struggle from the effect of Agent Orange.

Bill was born in Cleveland on Aug. 29, 1946, to Robert and Sally (Magee) Schmock and was a 1964 graduate of Cloverleaf High School. It was in 1963 while a student at Cloverleaf that he started the Cloverleaf Tennis Team. Bill attended Ashland University for 2 years and in 1966 was selected for the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a Private First Class having served from 1966 – 1968 and was awarded the Purple Heart on Nov. 3, 1967. On Feb. 9, 1974 he married the love of his life, Janet Conley and they were blessed with two children, Shannon and Chad. Bill retired from Premier Manufacturing in 2012 where he was a Quality Control Engineer.

Bill was a man who served his Country, his community, his family and his Lord. He served as the Mayor of Chippewa Lake for 22 years from 1979 – 2001. He was a member of the Medina County Vietnam Veterans Assoc. Chapter 385, American Legion Post 202, AMVETS Post 1990, served as a Medina County Home Core Adjutant, as well as the Central and Executive Committees of the Medina County Republican Party. Bill was Lay Speaker at his church, Church at the Lake, United Methodist.

From 2014 – 2020, Bill served on the Cloverleaf School Board and the Medina County School’s Career Center Board having been the President from 2017 - 2018, was a member of the Cloverleaf Citizens Advisory Board, the Board of Trustees of Lodi Community Hospital and the Medina County Seriff’s Advisory. He loved to play softball and tennis and was an Ohio State Buckeyes Fan.

Bill was one of a kind with a larger-than-life personality that always had a joke, a story and a laugh you walked away with. His friends described him with these words, Comedian, Patriot, Mayor, Coach, Athlete, Neighbor, Buckeye Fan, Mentor, Soldier, Pastor, Philosopher, Family Man and each hat that he put on, he wore well. The memories he created and the mark he left on those who knew him, will live forever.

Surviving is his wife, Jan; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and James Smith; son, Chad Schmock; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Bonnie Schmock and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be Thursday, Sept. 10th at 12:30 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home, 173 S. Main St., Creston, OH with burial following at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
