Virginia Falconer Ruhl Koucky died peacefully on November 16 at the age of 91. Born into one of Ohio and Pennsylvania’s early pioneer families, the daughter of banker and business leader Elias Blair Ruhl and Gladys Morgan McNally, she graduated from William & Mary College and married geologist and archaeologist Dr. Frank L. Koucky, Jr. of Chicago. She worked as a social worker in Illinois and pioneered headstart preschool education programs in disadvantaged communities in Cincinnati.
She was married for 60 years until her husband’s death in 2010 and followed his teaching career to Chicago, IL., Butte, MT., Champaign, IL., Cincinnati, OH. and Wooster, OH, with summers in Wyoming and a year in Wales. In her later years she owned an Amish quilt store in Berlin, OH, cared for numerous rescued cats and dogs and volunteered extensively on various state and local government and church committees to fight hunger, gifting the bulk of her inheritance to various charities devoted to feeding the poor.
She leaves behind 4 sons, Frank Louis Blair Koucky III of Carmel Valley, CA , David Blair Koucky and Walter Falconer Koucky of Cincinnati, and Jonathan Ruhl Koucky of Joplin, Missouri, plus 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A family burial services will be Saturday, Nov. 19th at Foxfield Preserve at the Wilderness Center in Wilmot. Murray Funeral Home in Creston, OH is handling arrangements.
