Shirley Marie Scruggs

Shirley Marie Scruggs, 84, of Creston, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, at the Avenue at Wooster while surrounded by her family.

Shirley was born in Wayne, WV on March 26, 1942, to James L. and Mary Belle (Booth) Hale and married Leslie H. Scruggs on April 18, 1969. Les preceded her in death on March 14, 2018 and they are together again. Shirley had worked as a Nurses Aide and later as the Activities Director at Meadowview Care Center in Seville. She enjoyed gardening and her flowers, she loved animals, especially her dog, Precious, but most of all, she enjoyed being Grandma to her grandkids.

Surviving are her three children, Renea Ayers, Duane Ayers and Les and his wife Tami Scruggs all of Creston; grandchildren, Jess (Tim) Pagniano, Autumn Lycans, Melissa (Adam Pamer) Ayers, Matthew Gilt, Cody (Samantha) Scruggs and Chris (Emily) Scruggs; great-grandchildren, Sage, Kamden, Kinsley, Kayden, Karson, Madison, Marshall, Marleigh and Cooper; brothers and sisters, Paul, Kenneth and Melvin Hale, Alice Elswick, Dorothy (Mack) Wyatt, Thelma (Ray) Kast, Judy (Ronnie) Adams and Connie (Gary) Vernotzy; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sherry Hale and Harold Adkins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Les; grandson, DJ; her parents, brothers, James and Ellis Hale and sister, Jewell Adkins.

Service will be Monday, Nov. 2nd at 1:00 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston where friends will be received on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. Burial will be in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, OH 44691.
