Norma J. Slater, 90, of Creston died peacefully on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at Burbank Parke Care Center following a period of declining health.
Norma was born Sept. 29, 1927 in Wadsworth to the late Sewall B. and Leafa (Steele) Sonnedecker and graduated from Creston High School in 1946. On Nov. 30, 1946 she married the man of her dreams, Carl H. “Whitey” Slater and he preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2016. Norma had made her home in Creston all of her life and was a member of the Creston United Methodist Church. She enjoyed painting, playing Bingo and watching the Cleveland Indians and the Cavaliers. Norma had many fond memories of dancing at Chippewa Lake and she always enjoyed being with her much loved family.
Surviving are her children, Steven Slater of Albany, GA, Vicki Slater of Apple Creek and Bruce (Cindy) Slater of Wooster; grandchildren, Janice (Jeff) Lewis, Janene Wilson, Michael Slater, Matthew Slater, Nick (Kim) Slater, Shaun (Kelly) Slater and Alisha (Justin) Gasser; her 10 great-grandchildren, Paul and Paige Lewis, Jackson, Samuel and Elizabeth Slater, Olive Slater, Grady and Brooklyn Gasser, Blake Slater and Lincoln Slater and a sister-in-law, Martha Sonnedecker of Albany, GA.
She was preceded in death by husband; her parents, a daughter-in-law, Loretta Slater and her brother Harry Sonnedecker.
Services will be Monday, July 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston with Pastor Lori Burdette-Steele officiating. Burial will be in Creston Maple Mound Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
