Michael Thompson, 71, of Wooster, went home to be with the Lord on Friday July 4, 2025 at home after a battle with cancer. His wife was at his side. Mike was born on December 8, 1953 in New Martinsville WV to Charles and Pauline (Stone) and was a 1972 graduate of Waynedale high school. On July 15, 1989 he married his sweetheart, Jill Messmore, with whom he shared almost 36 years together. She survives.
Mike was a mechanic by trade and retired from the Christian Children's Home.
Mike has always had a love for those in need, especially children which led to him and Jill becoming foster and adoptive parents. With their mixture of, as he would say, "home grown and imported" children they raised five incredible kids, all of whom have such amazing memories of their dad.
In 1993, out of his love for children, Mike founded Mountain Vision Ministries, which he led for 27 years, taking food, clothing gifts and the gospel of Jesus Christ into the Appalachian areas of West Virginia, Kentucky, and southern Ohio.
Mike was a member of Wooster Nazarene church and was a faithful servant of the Lord. Mike lived a life that put God first and others before himself. People describe Mike as humble, quiet, kind and caring, often serving others in ways that no one else ever saw.
Mike loved many things like fishing, hunting, playing baseball, John Wayne, and the New York Yankees. But more than anything he loved his kids, his wife, and his God
Surviving are his wife Jill, his children, Shawnon (Alan) Hester of Omaha NB, Cody (Kristina) Thompson of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Anne Ervin of Akron, James Thompson and his fiance Katelynn Tracey of Wooster, and Brian Thompson and his fiance Makenzee Hopkins of Nashville TN, eight grandchildren, a sister Sandy Thompson of Wooster, brothers Les Thompson and Randy (Alice) Thompson of Wooster and Bob (Eileen) Thompson of Tennessee and a brother in law Eugene Thompson of Rittman.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Chuck and Jerry Thompson and a sister Barbara Thompson.
Services will be Wednesday, July 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Wooster Nazarene with Pastor Jeremy Stasiowski officiating. Burial will be in Creston Maple Mound Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare or to the family. Murray Funeral Home in handling arrangements.
