George Robert Spencer

George Robert Spencer, 97, of Wooster, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024 at West View Healthy Living in Wooster after a period of declining health. George was born on the family farm south of Fredericksburg on July 27, 1927 to Heber W. and Mary (Kerr) Spencer and was a 1945 graduate of Fredericksburg High School.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 19, 1945 during WW II and served on the USS Kearsarge.  He was discharged on July 9, 1946.  On June 26, 1955 he married Marilyn M. Green at the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church.  George had been the Postmaster in Fredericksburg for a brief time and had worked at Borg Warner and at the OARDC where he retired in 1988 as the Maintenance Supervisor.  He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wooster and had been active in the Masons.  He had coached Little League and was an avid golfer and reader. George loved tinkering and mowing and he and Marilyn enjoyed Winters in Englewood and Venice, FL for 25 years.  George and Marilyn were recipients of the Old Hickory Award for their service and dedication to the Democratic Party.  He had enjoyed attending his children and granddaughters school events as well as in recent years visits with his great-granddaughters. Surviving are his daughter, Debra Becker of Dalton; his son, Rick Spencer of Alexandria, VA; granddaughters and their husbands, Katelyn and Nate Shultz and Kelsey and Amruth Bahadursha and great-granddaughters, Ainsley Grace and Nora Scout Shultz. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, on Dec. 5, 2018; son-in-law, Greg Becker; his parents and sisters and brothers, Dorothy Leeper, Florence Spencer, Heber K. Spencer, Harry Spencer, Willis Spencer, and Margaret Baer. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25th at 12:00 noon at First Presbyterian Church in Wooster where friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.   Lunch will be provided for all at 1:00 p.m. at the church.  Burial will be at Eastside Cemetery at Fredericksburg at 2:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, OH 44691or to West View Healthy Living, 1715 Mechanicsburg Rd., Wooster, OH 44691.  George’s family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the staff at West View Healthy Living for their kind and compassionate care given the past 5 years.
