Fonda J. Schlegel, 85, of Shreve, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at her home after a period of declining health since her April 26th stoke.
Fonda was born on April 2, 1938 in Marshallville and was the daughter of the late Richard D. and Verda (Miller) Pfouts. She graduated from Smithville High School in 1956. Fonda married Roy Schlegel on April 7, 1957 and she was a faithful farmer’s wife on their Dalroy Dairy Farm. She always had such nurturing, kind, caring soul not only to her children but also to animals that she nursed to health and brought into her farmhouse. Fonda enjoyed many hobbies from flower and vegetable gardening, lawn mowing, feeding her hummingbirds, raising chickens, and making an abundance of food for gatherings. Her perspective was always, “the more, the merrier”. Fonda was a member of the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church and the Holmes County Farm Bureau.
Surviving are her five children and their spouses, Kurt and Pamela Schlegel of Shreve, Shirley and Jim Croskey of Shreve, Steve and Delores Schlegel of Holmesville, Cheryl and Chris Nelson of Apple Creek and Ryan and Hilary Schlegel of Shreve; grandchildren, Nathan and his wife Katie Schlegel, Juliane and her husband Jordan Mast, Matthew Schlegel, Hannah Schlegel, Jimmy and his wife Lauren Croskey, Rachel and her husband Jeff Pendlebury, Sadie Schlegel, Hailey Schlegel, Natalie Schlegel, Christa Nelson, Holly and her husband Cody Daugherty, Stacie Nelson, Valerie Schlegel and Alex Schlegel; great-grandchildren, Micah, Titus, Cara, Brenna and Kenzie Schlegel, Emma and Charli Mast, JJ and Rozi Croskey and Vincent Pendlebury and Pearl her watch cat.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, her parents, a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Schlegel, a grandson, Kyle Schlegel and a sister, Wynona Franks.
Services will be Saturday, Aug. 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church with Pastor Nancy Dumford officiating. Burial will be in Fredericksburg East Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to services on Saturday.
The family extends their sincere thanks to the caregivers from Majora Lane, LifeCare Hospice and the five extraordinary and special ladies for their love and care. Murray Funeral Home in Fredericksburg is handling arrangements.
