Ervin V. Schaffter Jr.

Ervin V. Schaffter, Jr., 96, of Wooster and formerly of Sterling, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019 at Glendora Health Care Center after a period of declining health.

He was born in Rittman on Jan. 10, 1923 the son of the late Ervin V. Sr. and Nora (Mackey) Schaffter and was a graduate of Sterling High School. On June 23, 1946 he married the former Clara M. Gingery who preceded him in death on June 30, 2016. He retired from J.M. Smucker Company in Orrville and had made his home in the Sterling area most of his life. Erv enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling. He is remembered for having a green thumb and a beautiful garden and his love for the outdoors.

Surviving are his children, Keith and his partner, Laura Capron of Wadsworth and Karen and her husband Gene Cunningham of Fripp Island, SC; granddaughters, Shannon and Stephen Jordan, Stephanie Schaffter, Stacey and Todd deVries and Shelley and Joe Krebs; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Krebs, Ella deVries and Helena and Mae Jordan and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara, brothers, John and James and a sister, Virginia Bloch.

Family graveside services will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery in Sterling and there will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Murray Funeral Home in Creston is handling arrangements.
