Seville

Edward Robert Steele, 83, a lifelong resident of Seville, passed away from complications related to cancer on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at the Cleveland Clinic. Ed was born on April 11, 1939, at Wadsworth Hospital to the late Earnest Dwight and Mary Geraldine (Landis) Steele. He was a 1957 graduate of Seville High School where he played football and was a standout basketball player. He attended Wittenberg University and graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. On Sept. 24, 1966, he married the love of his life, Sarah Jane Bates who preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 2020. They are together again.  In August 1966, Ed began working for the City of Wadsworth as the City Engineer and on May 11, 2005 he officially retired but continued as a consultant for the City of Wadsworth until 2014.  Having held a Surveyors License, he worked as a surveyor and as a ground’s keeper at Mound Hill Cemetery in his retirement. Ed was a faithful member of Seville Presbyterian Church where he had served on the Church Session, the Property Committee and had been a former Treasurer.  Always active in the Seville Community, he had been a softball and baseball coach, served on the Seville Zoning Board and was a social member of the Seville V.F.W.  He loved sports, especially following OSU and the Cleveland Browns, Cavs and Indians. Ed was also a huge NASCAR fan attending many races and tracks throughout his lifetime. In his younger years, Ed used to drag race and was involved in stock car racing at tracks in the surrounding area. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, traveling and tinkering on his Ford Falcon, but his greatest enjoyment was following the many school, sporting and scouting events of his granddaughter and grandson who he was always so proud of. Ed will be greatly missed by his son, Tim Steele of San Diego; his daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Nick Wood of Creston; his two much loved grandchildren, Mikayla Wood and Nathan Wood; a special niece Cindy Gray of Barnesville; his faithful companion Shadow and many dear friends. In addition to his wife Sarah and his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert Steele.
