Donald Dean Hanzie, 80 of Creston, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018 at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster after a period of declining health.
Don was born April 21, 1938 in Sterling to the late Raymond and Arlene (Mast) Hanzie and was a 1956 graduate of Norwayne High School. On June 1, 1958 he married the former Phyllis Allen and together they shared 60 wonderful years together. Stricken with polio at the age of two, Don overcame many obstacles and worked for 48 years having been at Morton Salt for over 28 years where he was a Journeyman and later at RBA Inc. and at Aldridge Folders in Wadsworth where he finally retired from in 2003. He had made his home in Creston all of his life where he was a member of Creston-Canaan United Methodist Church and had coached Little League and Hot Stove baseball for 9 years with his son Jeff. Don and Phyllis enjoyed traveling having taken two trips to Japan to visit their son, Chris as well as trips to Branson, fishing trips to Canada and to Cedar Point. He enjoyed woodworking and caring for his home, attending his granddaughters’ school and sporting activities and in recent years caring for his great-grandsons. Don will be greatly missed but will be remembered for dedication and faithfulness to God and his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis, son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery Alan and Alana Hanzie of Creston; granddaughters and their husbands, Jessica and Joe Leonard and Julia and Dan Workman; great-grandsons, Colin and Logan Workman; sisters and brother, Helen and Tom Snyder of Creston, Jerry Hanzie of Tucson, AZ and Jeanne and Ken Glessner of Wooster; a brother-in-law, Bill Hardgrove of Rittman and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including Tomohiro Sato and his family who was a former exchange student. Don has been reunited with his daughter, Lori Jean who died in1965, his son, Christopher Michael Hanzie who died in 2013, his sister, Carole Hardgrove and his sister-in-law, Karen Hanzie.
Services will be Monday, Oct. 1st at 11:00 a.m. at Creston-Canaan United Methodist Church. Friends may call Sunday from 4-7 p.m.at Murray Funeral Home in Creston. Interment will be in Creston Maple Mound Cemetery.
