Clara M. Schaffter

March 15, 1925 — June 30, 2016

Clara M. Schaffter, 91, of Wooster, formerly of Sterling, died Thursday, June 30, 2016 at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster following a period of declining health. Clara was born March 15, 1925 near Sterling to the late Floyd and Alta (Hartel) Gingery and married Ervin Schaffter on June 23, 1946. He survivies and they were blessed with 70 years of marriage. She was a 1943 graduate of Sterling High School and retired after 21 years as the secretary at Sterling Elementary School. She was a member of Sterling United Methodist Church, the Ruth Circle and the Missionary Group and had been active in the youth ministries as well as had worked as the church secretary for several years. She was also member of the Sterling Retired Teachers Group. Clara enjoyed traveling, playing cards, entertaining and collecting pencils. He greatest enjoyment was the times she spent with her granddaughters and her great-grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Ervin; children, Keith Schaffter and his partner, Laura Capron of Wadsworth and Karen and her husband Gene Cunningham of Fripp Island, SC; 4 granddaughter, Shannon and Stephen Jordan, Stephanie Schaffter, Stacey and Todd deVries and Shelley and Joe Krebs; 4 great-grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Krebs, Ella deVries and Helena Jordan; sisters, Betty Lucas of Orlando, FL and Treva Wirth of Creston; a brother, Floyd Gingery of Wadsworth and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Thelma Uhler, LaVonne “Bonnie” Shaffer, Fern Sayre, Donna Davis and Mada Gingery. Services will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Sterling United Methodist Church with Pastor Tami Toothman-Shoup officiating. Burial will be in Sterling Crown Hill Cemetery.
