Arthur Lewis ‘Art’ Oswald, 71, of Creston, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Wooster Community Hospital of heart failure.

Art was born May 25, 1945 in Millersburg to the late Earl and Rosa (Feikert) Oswald. Art was the youngest of two sons. A 1963 graduate of Millersburg High School, Art continued his education at Western Kentucky University where he attained his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts in 1968.

It was at Western Kentucky that Art would meet his wife of 48 years, Cheryl (Green) Oswald. They were married on July 12, 1969 in Mt. Vernon. Two sons would follow; Peter Douglas ‘Doug’ Oswald born in 1974, followed by Andrew Lewis Oswald in 1980.

Art began his career and life’s passion in 1968 as an Industrial Arts teacher at Crestview High School in Ashland county. He would spend three years at Crestview before returning to Western Kentucky to pursue his Masters of Arts in Industrial Arts education. After receiving his degree in 1972 Art began his storied career at Norwayne High School where he would spend the next 45 years as the Industrial Arts teacher, primarily teaching woodworking and drafting.

Art took much pride in showing his students’ projects. The school year was not complete until the last project was perfectly arranged on display at the Ohio State Fair. The Wayne County Fair project display marked the transition to the new school year. The students’ efforts earned Norwayne over 20 Best of Exhibit trophies at the Ohio State Fair in Woodworking, Metalworking, and Plastics. The first of which was received in 1978.

For 44 years Art was involved with the Norwayne Football program. He did everything from the ‘chain gang’ to managing the game time clock.

Art was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church. Art was the head usher and served on the Property Committee. Art and Cheryl were previous members of Canaan Lutheran Church.

As an active member of the Creston Lions Club for nearly 45 years, Art served in many positions, most recently as treasurer. He received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award for his dedicated service and contributions to the Lions Club organization.

In August of 2016, Art was honored as a Citizen of the Year by the Creston Community Service Club.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; children: Doug (Jennifer) Oswald of Beaver Creek and Andrew (Alison) Oswald of Medina; grandchildren: Kathryn, Elisabeth, Griffin, and Adele Oswald; brother Robert (Georgie) Oswald of Millersburg and nieces and nephews.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Rosa Oswald.

Calling hours will be on Friday, April 21, 2017 from 4-8 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church ,301 N. Market St., Wooster. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Gardens in Wooster.Bereavement dinner will be held at Zion Lutheran Church. Tributes may be shared at www.Murray-Funeral-Home.com
