FREDERICKSBURG – Willis Carl Spencer, 90, of Fredericksburg, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare.

 

Willis (Bill) was born on October 8, 1929 in Holmes County to Heber W. and Mary (Kerr) Spencer and was a 1947 graduate of Fredericksburg High School.  He married Anita (Greenwald) Spencer on December 6, 1959 and she survives.  Bill served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 and was a member of the Fredericksburg American Legion. 

 He was a life-long active member of the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church severing as elder and enjoyed fellowship time with his church family.  When he was named Citizen of the Year of Fredericksburg in 1993 he reminded everyone “to try and work to make this a better world when you leave it.”

He served his community as a member of Grange, United Fund, Ruritan, Fredericksburg Elementary PTO, Waynedale Music Parents, Southeast School Board Member, Blood Mobile, Wayne County Board of Elections having worked the polls, Fredericksburg Volunteer Fire Department and was the sexton and secretary/treasurer of the Fredericksburg East Cemetery for many years.

He started work at the Coca Cola Bottling Co.  He retired after 37 years at Rexroth (Borg Warner).    He enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family, and keeping records of his heritage.  

He is survived by his wife, Anita; daughter, Leslie (Mike) Carr and Karen (Curt) Raber; his grandchildren, Jonathan (Jill), Kyle (Rachel), Christian (Jenna), and Andrew (Sarah) and 2 great grandchildren; his brothers, Heber K. (Ellen) Spencer and George Spencer and brother-in-law, John Leeper.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mark; brother, Harry and sisters, Florence Spencer, Margaret Baer, and Dorothy Leeper.   

Services will be Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jack McClelland officiating.  Burial will be in the Fredericksburg East Cemetery.  Friends will be received on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until time of services at the church.  Tributes may be shared at www.Murray-Funeral-Home.com  Memorial contributions may be made to the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church, 201 N.
