Richard “Dick” Johnson, former draftsman, fishing lodge owner and the self-proclaimed “Best Grandpa Ever,” died January 19, 2020, after an extended illness. He was 84.
Dick (aka “Hardly Able”) was unforgettable for his humor, sense of adventure and ability to persevere. From DJing to elderberry wrangling to leading his pack of grandchildren on a grand fishing expedition, Dick was always ready to kid around with those he loved.
The pillar of his life was his marriage to his wife of 51 years, Barbara Rhoads Johnson – a union that will continue to inspire many with its unbounded joy, mutual admiration and one heck of a lot of laughter. Together Dick and Barb raised their blended family, creating too many happy memories to list.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol, son Ricky and his brothers Leroy and Al. He is survived by his wife Barb; son Jim; daughters Loryn (Robert) Ray and Lisa Seward Perry; grandchildren Jordan, Abby, Jill, Nate, Ian, Hank and Andrew; brother Raymond; and a large circle of extended family and friends.
Services will be held at Murray Funeral Home in Creston on Thursday, January 23 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jim Cooper officiating. At Dick’s request, an “Irish wake” befitting a man of his stature will be held 12:30-3 at the Hunters Chase clubhouse in Wooster (4320 Hunters Chase Lane).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to LifeCare Hospice of Wooster. They wish to thank the entire Wooster Community Hospital health system for the caliber of care Dick received in this past year.
