Raymond Robert Shade, 94, of Chippewa Lake, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011 following a brief illness. His wife of 68 years, Carol Jean and his family were at his side.
Raymond was born July 26, 1917 in Ghent, OH to Elmer Sr. and Marvel (Dunn) Shade. He grew up on a farm and lived in Medina County his entire life. He served briefly in the United States Army. In the summer of 1942, Raymond met a city girl from Chicago staying with relatives on a neighboring farm. On June 4, 1943 Raymond married Carol Jean Root and together they raised three sons and a daughter. Raymond farmed, drove feed trucks for Medina Farmers Exchange and later drove cemetery trucks for Best Ready Mix and Silver Brothers. Raymond and his wife loved the outdoors, enjoyed hiking and observing wildlife. Raymond, nicknamed “Smiley”, smiled most while tending his bountiful vegetable garden, while playing cars or when his Cleveland Indians or Cavaliers were winning. Raymond enjoyed reading three different newspapers daily.
Raymond is survived by his wife Carol Jean; his sons Gary (Mary Alice) Shade of Smithville, Richard Shade and Robert Shade both of Chippewa Lake; daughter Ruth (Glenn) Rodden of Holton, KS; grandchildren Terry (Erin) Shade of West Chicago, IL and Dorene Shade of Wooster; three great-grandsons; a brother Elmer Shade Jr. of Medina and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death his parents, brother Earl Shade and sister Clarabell Sigler, nephews and a niece.
