Obituary:
The Rev. Norman Clayton Nelson, 81, Creston, went home to be with his Lord on Friday morning, July 23, 2010, in the peacefulness of his home after a battle with cancer.
Norm was born Dec. 22, 1928, in Sullivan County, Ind., the son of the late Harry Clayton and Bertha (Moss) Nelson, and married N. Maxine Coleman on Dec. 18, 1948. She survives.
He was a graduate of the American Bible School and was a Church of God minister since 1966, serving churches in Buchanan, Mich., Mishawaka, Ind., Elizabethton, Tenn., South Bend, Ind., Vinemont, Ala., Creston and Oceana, W.Va.
Following retirement in 1993, he moved back to Creston and continued to minister. He attended Highland Church of God in Wooster, and enjoyed golfing, fishing, baseball, coaching kids, gardening and always giving his produce away. He loved people and was always giving, sharing and serving others in the name of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Maxine; children Jacqueline (Anthony) VanderHeyden of Osceola, Ind., John Clayton (Christine) Nelson of Seymour, Ind., and Judy (Colin) Fitzpatrick of Smithville; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Nelson of Mishawaka, Ind.; a sister, JoAnn Garlet of Clay City, Ind.; many nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Lloyd, Harry and Ralph Nelson; and sisters, Evelyn Rehmel, Ruth Brown, and Bonnie Waltman.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Wooster Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Nathan Ward and Mark McCourt officiating. Burial will be Tuesday in Highland Cemetery in South Bend, Ind.
