Matthew McComas

October 7, 1993 - February 25, 2017

CRESTON - Matthew James McComas, 23, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017.

Born on October 7, 1993 in Wadsworth to Rev. Jim and Beth (Casteele) McComas, Matt grew up in Creston and was a graduate of Norwayne High School.  Matt was a handsome, intelligent, polite and kind young man. He loved life and his family and friends.  He was an avid tv watcher, car buff, history lover and always loved a good discussion on politics and current events.

He was a passionate Northeast Ohio sports fan, cheering on the Browns, Indians, Cavs and Ohio State Buckeyes.    Matt grew up in and was a member of Canaan Free Will Baptist Church.  Everyone that knew Matt loved him.  He touched each of those he came in contact with.  We are all better for having him in our lives for the short time God gave him to us and he will forever be in our hearts.

Matthew is survived by his parents, Jim and Beth McComas and brother Aaron of Nashville, TN, grandfather, James D. McComas of Creston; grandmother, Karen Logsdon of Lodi and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hester and Charley Casteele.

Services will Saturday, March 4th at 11:00 a.m. at Canaan Free Will Baptist Church in Creston where friends may call Friday from 3-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Saturday.  Burial will be in Creston Maple Mound Cemetery.  Tributes may be shared at  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donation be made to Free Will Baptist North American Ministries, 5233 Mt. View Rd., Antioch, TN 37013 or Robby’s Voice – Break the Silence, 1114 North Court St., #123, Medina, OH 44256.

Dearest Beth, Rev. Jim and Aaron,

There are no words to express how deeply saddened we were to hear of Matt's passing. Joey is heartbroken. But he said "Mom, I know Matt was saved and is with Jesus." Only fellow believers can truly know what that means. You are great parents and great people. My prayer for your family is that God will give you peace as only He can give. We are so sorry for your loss. You will remain in our prayers.

Psalm 139. He knows those that are His and in His book all the days of our life are written. Psalm 34:7 The angels of the Lord encamp around us and delivers those that know Him.

We lost a son in 1968 and seldom a day passes that his thought of him does not come to me. Memories are God's great gift to us.

My sincere prayer to the McComas family.

Matt... I'm fortunate to have known you for the past 7 months. Words can't express how I felt when I got the call that night. You are truly one of the best people I've ever had the opportunity to be close friends with, and this loss will create a void in all our lives that will be impossible to fill. Sports talk radio will never be the same without you, bro.

My deepest sympathies to Matt's family. He was an amazing young man and will be missed by many of us in the Akron community.

Dear Jim, Beth, and Aaron,
We want to send a message of heart-felt care to you at this most difficult time of loss, and sorrow.  We also want to say that the memorial for Matthew was the most meaningful such service that we have attended in a very long time.  We appreciate so much Beth's written tribute, and Jim's God given message of truth, challenge, and hope. It was good to smile over some funny times, but the baseball, and Kelly's Island shore stories were gripping.  May the Lord be pleased to bless you through and on. Our family sends thoughts of sympathy.  We are praying.

Dear Ones:  My love and prayers are with each of you at this sad time.  Matt must have been a vibrant person and when someone as that leaves us it leaves a void none could replace.  Yet we know that He now has seen the Master and sits at his feet rejoicing.  Those of many communities are sharing in your sorrow.  Jim, your words to the whole community were so very well spoken.  I pray that Matt's passing will cause many to come to the saving knowledge of Christ our Lord.  Even though I am old in age I have attended 7 different drug related meetings 6 in Wadsworth and one at Norton Grace Church, because if I can help just one person I will.  I care about you and your family and all those who suffer with the problems of addiction.  In Jesus Love,

Name: Rev. Mark & Diana Cavinee

Pastor, Diana and I listened to your message at your son's funeral this evening and it brought both joy and sadness to our hearts. Joy that the angels in Heaven are rejoicing, and sadness for you and your family over the death of Matthew.

Diana and I pastored the First Wesleyan Church in Rittman for 9 years.

Blessings on you and your family.

Pastor Mark & Diana Cavin
