Carl H. "Whitey" Slater

Obituary:

Carl H. “Whitey” Slater Jr., 89, of Creston, died Monday evening, Oct. 17, 2016 at Burbank Parke Care Center following a period of declining health.
Carl was born Nov. 30, 1926 in Burbank to the late Carl Sr. and Dorothy (Parmalee) Slater and married the love of his life, Norma Sonnedecker on Nov. 30, 1946.  She survives.  He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II  and retired from Tinnerman Eaton Corp. in Cleveland and had previously worked for Sears in Wooster.  He had made his home in Creston all of his life and was a member of the Creston American Legion Post 497, Creston Moose Lodge 1224 and the Creston United Methodist Church.  Whitey loved baseball having played for many years in area leagues as well as having coached the Wayne Pioneers in Wooster.  He coach little league in Creston, helped with the Norwayne High School Baseball Program, having always loved to watch kids play and grow in the sport and was a big Cleveland Indians Fan.  Whitey also enjoyed woodworking and making grandfather clocks which he made for his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife, Norma; children, Steven Slater of Albany, GA, Vicki Slater of Apple Creek and Bruce (Cindy) Slater of Wooster; grandchildren, Janice Lewis, Janene Wilson, Michael Slater, Matthew Slater, Nick Slater, Shaun Slater and Alisha Gasser; great-grandchildren, Paul and Paige Lewis, Jackson, Samuel and Elizabeth Slater, Olive Slater and Grady Grasser and Blake Slater.  Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Walter (Kate) Slater of Creston, Alice (Norman) Pamer of Stow, Zella Leaman of Ashland and Bill (Ruth) Slater of Rittman; brother-in-law, Harry (Martha) Sonnedecker of Albany, GA and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Loretta Slater and a brother James
Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston with Pastor Deborah Quillen officiating.  Burial will be in Creston Maple Mound Cemetery.  Friends may call Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.  Tributes may be shared at www.Murray-Funeral-Home.com  Memorials contributions may be made to the Norwayne High Baseball Program, 350 S.
