William D. "Bill" Slater
1934 - 2017
William D. Slater, 82, of Rittman, died Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster after a brief illness.
Bill was born in Creston to the late Carl Sr. and Dorothy (Parmalee) Slater and attended Creston High School where he played baseball and basketball. On Nov. 4, 1955 he married the former Ruth Schorle and she survives. He retired from Conrail in 1996 having first worked for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad and had a total of over 40 years of service between the two railroads. He had made his home in Creston most of his life prior to moving to Rittman. He loved playing and listening to music. Bill enjoyed bicycling having up to recently biked 6 – 10 miles daily and loved following the local sports teams, especially the Norwayne Girls Basketball and those that his grandchildren played on. He will be sadly missed.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth; children, William “Billy” Slater of Creston, Jacqulyn Magyar of Sterling, Thomas Slater of Rittman, Sandra (Richard) Smith of Glenmont and Greg (Lori) Slater of Creston; grandchildren, Amanda Newhouse, James Magyar, Matthew Magyar, Chasity Burton, Codey Slater, Caidian Jensen, Jason Slater, Adam Percum and Jessica Slater; great-grandchildren, Alizabeth, Josephine, Lilyann, Bailey and Daxton; brother, Lawrence (Kate) Slater of Creston; sisters, Alice (Norman) Pamer of Stow and Zella Leaman of Ashland and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, James Magyar, and brothers, James Slater and Carl “Whitey” Slater.
Services will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston with Rev. Don Hartwell officiating. Burial will be in Creston Maple Mound Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
