Obituary:

RITTMAN -- Bascom L. Dean, 83, of Rittman, died peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at his home after a lengthy illness.

Bascom was born Jan. 21, 1928, in Fort Gay, W.Va., the son of the late Scott and Julia (Billups) Dean and married Greta M. Boyce on Dec. 9, 1947. She survives.  He was a hard working man having worked on the railroad and in the coal mines. He was owner/operator of many businesses and had worked for Jones Construction as an operating engineer for many years. Later he worked for Boys' Village in security and following retirement had worked on and sold lawnmowers as a hobby.  He was a member of Sterling Free Will Baptist Church and Rittman Community Free Will Baptist Church. He had made his home in Rittman most of his life.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Greta; children, Dianna Furman of Rittman, Nona Faye Dean of Wadsworth, Walter "Butch" (Susan) Dean of Rittman, Brenda (Bill) Metheney of Creston, Jay "Bud" Dean, Ernest Dean and Carl Dean, all of Rittman; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul Dean of Rush, Ky., and Tom Dean of Clay City, Ky.; sisters, Esther "Sis" Kitts of Burbank and Clara Faye (Jim) Keim of Wooster; nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, Bruno.  A brother, Charles, died previously.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rittman Community Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Castle officiating. Burial will be in Creston Maple Mound Cemetery.  Friends may call Friday from 5-8 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston.   Memorial contributions may be made to Barberton Hospice & Palliative Care, 103 Fifth St., SE, Suite S, Barberton 44203.
